How can we tell if our joints are ideal?
I hope you're doing well! I’ve got another piece of fascinating information that could change how you think about joint pain and injuries.
Did you know that an ideal joint at rest should be supple and springy?
That’s right – when our joints are relaxed, they should move easily and feel flexible.
But if you’re experiencing locked-up, sensitive joints, it’s actually part of your brain’s protection mechanism.
Here’s the scoop: Our brains are constantly on the lookout to protect our bodies from harm.
When it senses potential danger, it sends signals to our muscles to splint our joints to stiffen up and become less mobile.
This is our brain’s way of trying to prevent further injury, but it can also lead to discomfort and limited movement.
The good news?
By understanding this protective response, we can work to resolve it and restore our joints to their natural, supple state.
And contrary to popular belief, this process is actually quite basic.
These protective responses are measurable and, once calmed, pain and injury problems are often fixed.
Let me share a story about one of our clients, John. He came to us with a persistent, stiff ankle that had been bothering him for years. Traditional treatments hadn’t provided lasting relief.
When we examined him, we found that his brain was sending protective signals to his ankle joint, as well as a joints in his low back, causing them to lock up and lose springiness.
By using specific techniques to relax these connected, protective responses in his low back, we helped John regain the natural movement in his ankle.
His pain decreased, and he was able to return to his favourite activities without discomfort.
As Australian pain scientist David Butler explains, "The brain produces pain when it concludes that body tissues are in danger and need protecting." This quote underscores the importance of understanding the brain's role in pain and joint stiffness.
However, it’s also crucial to recognize that the brain doesn’t just produce pain – it actively engages protective mechanisms within the body itself.
This protective response, such as muscle tightening or joint stiffening, perpetuates the pain cycle.
By addressing and calming these protective responses, we can often resolve pain and injury issues at their core.
